Alexandria, VA (June 23, 2017) Two staff members of Helicopter Association International (HAI) met with other aviation and industry stakeholders this week as members of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s new Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Identification and Tracking Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) to provide recommendations to the FAA related to remote identification and tracking of UAS..

HAI President and CEO Matthew Zuccaro co-chairs the committee with Designated Federal Official Earl Lawrence, director of the FAA’s UAS Integration Office. Additionally, HAI Vice President of Operations Chris Martino serves on the ARC, and is a member of the ARC’s “Working Group 3 – Implementation” team. Overall, the committee includes more than 70 members who represent companies and agencies involved or affected by the growing UAS industry.

“We are grateful to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta for including HAI in such prominent roles on this committee,” says Zuccaro. “The operation of UAS in the National Airspace System touches so many elements of aviation, and we believe the helicopter industry is uniquely positioned to lead these discussions. Our aircraft operate in much of the same airspace as drones, and members of our industry are already leaders in safely integrating UAS into their business models.

“We appreciate the opportunity to work in partnership with the FAA and representatives from other relevant businesses and organizations,” adds Zuccaro. “The sessions this week focused on ensuring adequate remote identification and tracking of UAS and their owner / operators, which is vital to the safety and security of everyone in aviation.”
