'Packed With Color' Art Installations Now on Display for Travelers in Austin

May 24, 2017

With its vibrant colors, an Austin-Bergstrom International Airport exhibit highlighting the diversity of talent in textile arts, along with local contemporary painters, brightens the airport this season. This exhibit in the Barbara Jordan Terminal is accessible past security checkpoints to ticketed passengers. It can be seen in the pylon showcases between gates 7-11 and the East Airside Gallery from now until the end of August.

Austin Fiber Artists (AFA), a non-profit educational organization of local artists who create various kinds of fiber art from weaving to felting to wearable art, has created an exhibition specifically designed for the airport’s pylon showcases.

“Packed with Color” is a juried exhibition from AFA, in which a call went out to artists all over the country challenging them to think about the airport when conceptualizing an art piece for submission. The resulting show displays a delightful array of responses to either the exhibit space or the idea of travel.

In addition to the AFA fiber submission pieces on display, Austin Contemporary Artists Sharon Bibbee, Jane Fier, Marilyn Rodriquez and Joy Timmons fill the East Airside Gallery with delightfully bright and colorful paintings inspired by their own life experiences in the heart of Hill Country.
