The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) strives to promote sustainability and education whenever possible, especially during Earth Week 2017, which took place April 17 through April 23.
The CDA was proud to plant 22 trees at the O'Hare Administration Building during Earth Week. Working closely with the USDA, the CDA selected tree species that do not attract wildlife and can also withstand the varying Chicago seasons. Varieties planted were Aristocrat Pears, Catalpa, Skyline Honey Locust, and Exclamation London Planes.
The CDA's concessionaires commitment to sustainability was on full display in the terminals with creative exhibits showing the recyclable and compostable packaging and products used at O'Hare and Midway International airports, including bags, containers and utensils, which help to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfills.
Midway concessionaries also gave away recycled tote bags with store purchases over the weekend and for the entire month of April, Argo Tea is taking $1 off tea purchases if you use your own travel mug, so there is still time left.
Lastly, the CDA is very proud to announce the launch of a new link promoting all Sustainable Airport Manual (SAM) Certified Projects. SAM Certificates are awarded to airport projects that demonstrate commitment to sustainability during the planning, design, construction, and into operations and maintenance phases. Each project undergoes a thorough review of all aspects of the project, including use of sustainable materials, recycling, pollution prevention controls, energy reduction initiatives, alternative transportation, efficient lighting, water reduction initiatives, sustainable innovations, and much more.
