For the third consecutive year, HNTB Corp. aviation planning and engineering professionals delivered guest lectures as part of the airport planning course for California State University, Los Angeles. The session was held at HNTB’s office at Los Angeles International Airport.
Supplementing the airport planning curriculum developed and presented by adjunct professor and former HNTB employee Joshua Wussick, HNTB guest lecturers from the firm’s aviation team included Justin Bychek, Sierra Allegra, Tony Fermelia, James Long, Ken Poon, Al Eltom and Ali Aoude.
The speakers shared details on the firm’s notable airport projects and case studies. Topics included: U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s new “Baggage First” facility planning; airfield and airspace simulation tools; aircraft gate parking planning; construction phasing; determination of an airport’s critical aircraft; runway marking; and hangar planning and design.
“This valuable program is an exciting opportunity for both the students and guest instructors to interact, share knowledge, and demonstrate a variety of potential career paths within the aviation industry,” said Allegra, HNTB airfield design engineer. “The students in the program have a promising future ahead of them. We enjoyed the opportunity to participate and look forward to watching these young professionals succeed in the industry.”
Offered by the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology, the course covers concepts of airport planning and construction; community surveys related to social, economic and physical characteristics; political influences and phases of airport construction. The course is part of the Bachelor of Science aviation administration degree program offered at CSULA for college freshmen and transfer students.
HNTB’s many signature aviation projects include design of the air traffic control tower at San Francisco International Airport; design of the “Green Build” expansion at San Diego International Airport; engineering and design services at Los Angeles World Airports; design and construction management of runway status lights implementation at airports across the country; and design of the runway expansion at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
