Indy Airport Welcomes Another Alaska Airlines Flight

March 9, 2017

Indianapolis travelers connecting to the West Coast and other leisure and business destinations in the Pacific Northwest and Asia have yet another flight option thanks to Alaska Airlines.

The airline, which will launch its inaugural nonstop flight to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in May, will also offer nonstop flights daily to San Francisco beginning Sept. 26.

“Adding this flight -- at this time -- sends a clear message about the value Alaska Airlines sees in Indianapolis,” said Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority. “First Seattle, a destination that has been long awaited, and now an additional investment in a nonstop daily flight to another crucial market that connects not only regions but continents. That’s a statement we’re taking full note of as we welcome Alaska Airlines to the city.”

The news comes in the same week Frontier Airlines announced it will be adding a nonstop flight to Las Vegas, and one month after Southwest and Allegiant announced Indy will be welcoming a new nonstop seasonal flight to San Diego and a daily nonstop flight to Austin, Texas this summer. Currently, United Airlines offers nonstop flights to San Francisco.

Rodriguez says the addition of these westward flights give the Indianapolis International Airport a strong network of travel options to the West Coast, a regional area of the United States that connects to the Indy tech sector and conference opportunities– in addition to leisure destinations.

“Last year we made history in the number of passengers that traveled through the Indy airport," said Barbara Glass, IAA board president. "That's a good indicator to our airline partners of the business Indy can deliver, and we look forward to welcoming Alaska Airlines to the community.”

With the acquisition of Virgin America, Alaska Airlines is able to provide more aircraft and gates on the West Coast. Flights from Indy to San Francisco will be served by Virgin America Airbus aircraft.
