Nov. 29, 2016
Located at SupportCAF.org from December 1, the month-long campaign will provide an opportunity to support any aircraft in the CAF’s collection of 165 planes.
The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is organizing the “12 Planes of Christmas,” a holiday giving campaign that enables people to support the restoration and operation of World War II aircraft. Located at SupportCAF.org from December 1, the month-long campaign will provide an opportunity to support any aircraft in the CAF’s collection of 165 planes.  In particular, it highlights a dozen restoration projects that are being undertaken by CAF volunteers around the nation.
FEATURED AIRCRAFT:The CAF Dixie Wing FG-1D Corsair will be one of the featured aircraft. The mighty Corsair is probably one of the most famous American fighter planes ever. The Corsair is known as the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history.

HIGHLIGHT: The CAF Dixie Wing, after researching the U.S. Navy archives, has determined that its Corsair was based at NAS Atlanta in Chamblee with the local Reserve Training Squadron from May 19, 1950 until January 2, 1952. The aircraft was used to train pilots for the Korean conflict.

The Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing operates 1945 WWII FG-1D Corsair fighter plane that was based in Atlanta at Naval Air Station Atlanta ( Now Dekalb-Peachtree Airport).  There are few than 20 Corsairs in the world still flying and our hometown hero is undergoing a multi-year restoration.  The Corsair was made famous in the Pacific Theater by the Black Sheep Squadron, The Jolly Rogers, The Checkerboards and was even flown by Charles Lindbergh.  The CAF Dixie Wing Flying Museum, a 100% volunteer organization, is raising funds to cover the cost of the engine replacement at just over $100,000.  You can visit this rare aircraft right here in Metro Atlanta at the CAF Dixie Wing Flying Museum.  Please help support keeping this rare aircraft flying!
