SFO Chief Information Officer Wins National Award For Innovation

Oct. 20, 2016

The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) recently honored San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Chief Information Officer Ian Law with their ‘Most Innovative Individual in Airports’ Award. Under Law’s direction, the SFO Information Technology and Telecommunications team created an automated solution to track app-based forms of commercial ground transportation at the airport. The system has quickly become the industry model for airports across the U.S.

“SFO is committed to revolutionizing the airport experience, and our Information Technology and Telecommunications team, led by Ian Law, has made a significant contribution to our status as an industry leader,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “We are grateful for the AAAE and their role as an advocate for innovation in our industry, and for honoring our Chief Information Officer with this award.”

“Innovation would be just another buzzword if it weren’t for dedicated people like Ian Law who work tirelessly to improve airports through creative thinking and seamless implementation of their ideas,” AAAE President and CEO Todd Hauptli said. “The work that Ian and his team have done to keep SFO ahead of the innovation curve is exceptional, and AAAE and the Airport Innovation Accelerator are pleased to recognize and celebrate his work.”

Ian Law received the award in a ceremony at the AAAE’s 2nd Annual Airport Innovation Forum in Silicon Valley, held on Oct. 11-13.

Earlier this year, SFO’s Information Technology and Telecommunications group was named in CIO magazine’s annual “CIO 100” awards for their innovative use of information technology to create and deliver business value.

In 2015, SFO was honored with a 2015 “Best of California” award by the Center for Digital Government, which recognizes public-sector employees and local government organizations for their contribution to information technology issues in the State of California. In the category of “Best In-House Developed Application”, the Airport was recognized for creating the Application-Based Commercial Transport System, which tracks app-enabled commercial vehicles operating within airport boundaries.
