BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport Kicks-Off Summer Youth Initiative

Aug. 15, 2016

On Aug. 15, 50 Baltimore City students began the Second Annual Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Summer Youth Initiative.  The week-long program was created to provide students with the unique opportunity to learn about the airport, aviation, and the many career opportunities related to transportation.

“This innovative program will introduce the students to the vast world of aviation and transportation,” said Governor Larry Hogan.  “We want to capture the imagination of these young students as they think about education and careers in the years to come.  We hope these future leaders will be inspired by what they learn this week.”

Participants in the BWI Marshall Airport Summer Youth Initiative come from five Baltimore City recreation centers.  Throughout the week, the students will be immersed in the day-to-day operation of BWI Marshall Airport, Martin State Airport, and local businesses.  The program will include specific sessions related to airport management, airline operations, aviation security, transportation logistics, the hospitality industry, and business.  Program leaders and instructors will offer their knowledge and experience during the program while emphasizing the importance of education, hard work, and discipline.

“BWI Marshall Airport is a gateway to the world for residents and businesses throughout the region,” said Ricky Smith, Chief Executive Officer for BWI Marshall Airport.  “This program will help support and encourage these students to embrace the proper work ethic and consider future careers in the aviation industry.”
