Black Wall Street Exhibition Unveiled at Tulsa International Airport

Aug. 4, 2016

Tulsa International Airport held an unveiling event Aug. 4, for Black Wall Street; a four panel narrative art exhibition that showcases the history of Tulsa’s storied Greenwood District. Each panel reflects a period of time in Greenwood and the realities that African American business owners encountered as the local, regional, and national dialogue evolved around race relations in the 1910’s – 60’s.

The exhibit is presented by The Greenwood Experience and is the brainchild of Bill White, whose vision and creativity sparked broad community interest. It not only highlights Tulsa’s African American entrepreneurial legacy, once on prominent display in the Greenwood District, but also seeks to inspire and nurture a modern-day “Black Wall Street” movement.

“The Exhibit is designed to inform, inspire, and bring tourists to the Greenwood District. The Airport was chosen because it’s the gateway to Tulsa and I have found that travelers are often more open to learn and explore a city,” said Bill White, Founder of the Greenwood Experience. “My sheer intent is to give Tulsans and travelers the opportunity to learn, explore and invest in Tulsa’s uniquely rich African-American entrepreneurial history and future.”

The unveiling event included a book signing by Hannibal B. Johnson, who wrote Black Wall Street – From Riot to Renaissance in Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood District and Up from the Ashes, as well as musical performances by Metropolitan Baptist Church.

The Black Wall Street exhibit becomes part of a growing effort by Tulsa International Airport to highlight cultural aspects of the Tulsa community in a manner that engages and inspires travelers on their journey. “The airport is honored to be the first to host the Black Wall Street exhibit because it celebrates our community’s resiliency, determination, and ability to overcome even the most difficult of times,” said Jeff Mulder, Airports Director. “Travelers and locals alike will be able to learn more about Tulsa and see our City as a collaborative, diverse community.”

The exhibit is located pre-security in Schwab Hall near the rental car counters and will be on display at the airport until February 2017. The traveling exhibit will then be displayed at other community institutions in an effort to grow awareness across Tulsa of one of our city’s most historic districts.

Airport art exhibits are approved by Tulsa International Airport’s Cultural Advisory Group, who develops strategic plans for incorporating art and cultural exhibits in areas throughout the terminal to showcase local artists, galleries and museums.
