Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V. (OMA) started construction of the new passenger terminal for the Acapulco Airport. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Héctor A. Astudillo, governor of the State of Guerrero; Gerardo Ruiz, the secretary for communications and transportation; Enrique de la Madrid, secretary for tourism; Yuriria Mascott, the undersecretary for transportation; and Jesús Evodio, the mayor of Acapulco. OMA’s delegation was headed by Board Chairman Diego Quintana and CEO Porfirio González.
González presented the detailed scope of the project, which will require an investment by OMA of Ps. 547 million over 20 months.
The new terminal building will encompass 18,800 m2, in three levels plus a mezzanine. The passenger check-in area will have 34 fixed and another nine automated check-in counters. The passenger security checkpoint will have three lines operating simultaneously, and be equipped with the latest generation technology to meet all security requirements. The new terminal will have a capacity of 1.3 million domestic and international passengers per year, with arrival and departure flow separation, six boarding gates, and three passenger jetways. The ramp area will have three aircraft contact positions, six semi-contact positions, and six remote positions.
The project emphasizes operating efficiency, vanguard architectural design, energy savings, modern technology, and a sustainable building that provides a balance between the environment and the requirement to serve 1.3 million passengers, with the capacity for future expansion, based on the evolution of traffic.
Diego Quintana, OMA’s Chairman of the Board, said, “Today is a very important day for the Acapulco Airport, marking the the generational change in the terminal building. The terminal will be completely transformed through intelligent engineering, which will enable us to provide greater comfort and safety for passengers, visitors, airlines, and other service providers.”
Porfirio González, OMA’s CEO, added, “OMA is committed to improving the connectivity of this important tourist destination. We will continue to work closely with the government of Guerrero, the Ministry of Communications and Transportation, and the Ministry of Tourism in the construction of the new Acapulco.”
The airport will continue to operate normally through the terminal construction phase, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2018.
