SFO Welcomes WOW air Nonstop Service to Iceland

June 10, 2016

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) welcomes WOW air, the ultra-low-cost transatlantic airline from Iceland, and their new nonstop service between San Francisco and Reykjavík, which began June 9.  The airline plans to operate service between SFO and Iceland five times per week, using new Airbus A330-300 aircraft.

“I am pleased to welcome WOW air to San Francisco - the Innovation Capital of the World,” said Mayor Lee.  “SFO is the international gateway to the Bay Area, and this new service links two great cities of culture, tourism, and technology.  I fully expect this flight will be a success.”

“I am proud that WOW air has chosen SFO for its expansion to the West Coast of the United States,” said Airport Director John L. Martin.  “We share WOW’s passion for making air travel an enjoyable experience, and SFO guests can look forward to a fun, economical way to travel to Iceland and beyond.”

WOW air was founded in 2011 by technology and telecommunications entrepreneur Skúli Mogensen, initially offering service to 20 major European cities before expanding operations to North America.  With the addition of service to San Francisco and Los Angeles, WOW will service six cities in the United States and Canada, using new Airbus A330 aircraft with 340 seats in a single-class configuration.

WOW plans to operate flights between San Francisco and Keflavík International Airport five days a week, scheduled to allow for connecting flights on to other European destinations.  WOW expects to double its capacity in this year, serving over 1.8 million passengers worldwide.
