Mitchell Airport Baggage Claim Earns LEED Certification

June 7, 2016

Milwaukee County’s General Mitchell International Airport has been notified that the Baggage Claim Renovation Project has received LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

“Mitchell Airport’s Baggage Claim is the first building owned by Milwaukee County to become LEED certified, and it’s another reason that MKE is providing the best travel experience for travelers from throughout Wisconsin and Illinois,” County Executive Chris Abele said.  “The energy-efficient features of this new building are impressive, and it’s great that this state-of-the-art building has become a beautiful front door for visitors to Milwaukee County and beyond.”

The new Baggage Claim includes the following green features:

  • Zipper skylight runs the entire length of Baggage Claim
  • Lights automatically adjust to ambient light and building occupancy
  • Solar tubes provide natural light in restrooms
  • Green Roof saves energy and reduces water runoff
  • Energy dashboard viewable to public shows performance of HVAC, lighting, green roof and recycling efforts
  • Project received incentive grants from MMSD and Focus on Energy

The newly-remodeled facility, which supports Milwaukee County’s Green Print initiative, opened in 2015.  The new facility has received many positive reviews from travelers and industry experts, touting its efficiency, straightforward design, ease of use, and faster baggage delivery.
