The second-generation satLINK MAX is approved for safety voice and data communications, includes up to four satellite modems, integrates Avionica’s miniQAR technology, and supports an optional 4G cellular communications device for ground communications

ATLANTA – April 26, 2016 – Avionica announced today that Dubai-based flydubai has selected a suite of communications avionics that comprises Avionica’s second-generation satellite communications system satLINK MAX, the integral miniature quick-access recorder (miniQAR), the 4G avCM module for wireless communications, the gatelink terminal WiFi communications system, and the aviONS on-board server platform, with an integrated cabin WiFi hotspot, for 11 Next-Generation Boeing 737 aircraft.

The aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2016 and 2017.

“We are excited to continue to build on our relationship with flydubai that began more than seven years ago. flydubai’s selection of Avionica as their preferred communications and on-board server solution is a testament to the value Avionica continues to deliver.  These innovative, cutting-edge avionics will enable flydubai to enjoy greater flexibility and scalability at a fraction of the price over the more rigid original equipment manufacturer solutions,” said Anthony Rios, vice president of sales at Avionica, speaking from the Avionics Maintenance Conference in Atlanta.

Avionica previously delivered more than 60 satellite communication, miniQAR, and 3G cellular communications units to flydubai for certified installation on the airline’s Boeing 737 fleet.  The latest selection marks the airline’s transition to the next generation of satellite and 4G cellular communications systems.

The second-generation satLINK MAX, which weighs less than 4 pounds and is approved for safety voice and data communications, includes up to four satellite modems, integrates Avionica’s miniQAR technology, and supports an optional 4G cellular communications device for ground communications. Typical satLINK MAX installations include two flight deck channels for air traffic voice services, one Future Air Navigation System (FANS-1/A) datalink channel, and one voice-and-data capable cabin service channel.

The satLINK MAX exceeds Federal Aviation Administration Safety Services performance requirements for FANS-1/A and air traffic voice services. The technology is in use on more than 800 aircraft worldwide, supported by existing Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) for Boeing 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and MD10/11 aircrafts.

The addition of Avionica’s onboard network server, the aviONS, to flydubai’s cockpit enables the airline to host advanced software applications for safe and efficient operations.  With expanded capacities of up to 1 terabyte, the aviONS provides the flexibility to support tomorrow’s leading edge software systems. Avionica holds existing STCs for Boeing 737, 777, 767, and MD11 aircrafts for the onboard server.

Avionica is the developer and leading provider of miniature quick-access recorders. The third-generation miniQAR Mk III can record up to two ARINC 717 channels for commercial aircraft flight data recording and up to three standard data transfer ARINC-429 channels.  Support from Avionica’s 4G avCM wireless cellular module and the lightweight aviONS onboard network server allow flight operators of air transport and business jets to connect to their airline’s data network. Digital transfer takes place in real-time over secure wireless high-speed Internet and network connections no matter how remote the airport.
