For the second year, HNTB Corp. aviation professionals delivered a guest lecture as part of the Airport Planning course for California State University, Los Angeles. The session was held at HNTB’s office at Los Angeles International Airport.

Supplementing the airport planning curriculum developed and presented by adjunct professor and former HNTB employee Joshua Wussick, HNTB guest lecturers Justin Bychek, Jean-Christophe Dick, Tony Fermelia, James Long, Jessica Wyatt and Jennie Santoro referenced notable airport projects and case studies. Topics included runway incursion mitigation; U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility planning; aircraft gate parking planning; airport layout plans; and runway safety area design.

“The students thoroughly enjoyed learning about a variety of ‘real-world’ case studies that were shared by the professionals who were involved in the projects,” said Justin Bychek, PE, HNTB senior aviation planner. “The Cal State LA program has a rich history of teaching and producing the next generation of aviation professionals and our team appreciates the opportunity to play a part in their professional educational process.”

Offered by the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology, the course covers concepts of airport planning and construction; community surveys related to social, economic and physical characteristics; political influences and phases of airport construction. The course is part of the Bachelor of Science aviation administration degree program offered at CSULA for college freshmen and transfer students.

“Industry partners like HNTB bring an added dimension and real-world insight to our students when they serve as guest lecturers,” said Keith Mew, Ph.D., CM, professor and department chair, CSULA Department of Technology. “Our goal is to enhance the learning environment by engaging industry professionals who can provide students with in depth insights and first hand experiences about regional airport projects.”
