Aviation Boom in Asia: MTU Aero Engines at the Singapore Airshow

Feb. 12, 2016
Asian market for commercial airliners is expected to continue to grow at a fast pace over the next 20 years.

Munich, February 12th, 2016 - From February 16 through 21 the global aviation industry’s who’s who will come together again for a major event, to see what chances one of the biggest aviation markets in the world has in store. After all, the Asian market for commercial airliners and the technologies and services for their engines is expected to continue to grow at a fast pace over the next 20 years. According to Airbus and Boeing, 39 percent of the worldwide aircraft deliveries will go to Asia. As in previous years, MTU Aero Engines, Germany’s leading engine manufacturer, will again showcase its products and services at this year’s Singapore Airshow at the Changi Exhibition Center near the airport. As things stand today, MTU Aero Engines has a share of as much as 28 percent of the fleet for airliners in the 20,000-pound-plus thrust class in the Asian market and wants to increase this percentage further.

If the current forecasts are correct, China – the largest market in Asia – will be the largest regional aviation market by 2035, replacing the U.S. as number one. Today, 30 percent of the airplanes delivering more than 20,000 pounds of thrust in the worldwide fleet are flying in Asia. Today, MTU has program stakes especially in the V2500 engine for the Airbus A320 family, the CF6-80C/E for the A330 and the GEnx for Boeing’s Dreamliner, that are extensively being used in Asia. At the trade show, MTU will be presenting products and services for the entire life cycle of commercial and military propulsion systems. Innovative technology, top-notch quality in production and flexible service offerings tailored to the customers’ specific requirements will be on display at its booth J65.

The focus of MTU’s trade show exhibits is on the mega trends for tomorrow’s aviation: reduced fuel burn, lower carbon-dioxide emissions, and less noise. An engine that fits the bill is the geared turbofan (GTF) for single-aisle aircraft, for example. Its technology is prominently featured in the trade show display in the form of an interactive holography box. The 3-D animations and film clips offer visitors information on MTU’s core modules, the high-speed low-pressure turbine and the company’s role in the high-pressure compressor.

For operators and airlines to be successful, it is important for them to be able to keep the aircraft in their fleets flying – and MTU is aiming to help its customers, notably also in Asia, to achieve this goal. The strong position MTU has gained in the aftermarket thanks to MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, which has been a successful player in this market for more the 13 years now, gives its business in China and other parts of Asia a boost. The 50/50 joint venture of MTU Aero Engines and China Southern Air Holding Company spearheads engine MRO in the region. Today, MTU Maintenance Zhuhai is the No. 1 engine maintenance provider in China, a position which it attained within a mere ten years' time. And MTU wants to grow further: The aim is not just to be the largest commercial engine maintenance provider in China, but in all of Asia. The odds are excellent for this goal to become a reality: MTU already holds maintenance licenses for 80 percent of the engine models flying in Asia. At the air show MTU will showcase its highly innovative technologies and high-tech repair procedures, which the company has developed in-house. They underline MTU’s commitment to products and services that fit every engine, irrespective of its age – whether the latest generation of engines or propulsion systems at or near the end of their life cycles.
