Inmarsat High-Data-Rate Service Channel Bonding Ready for Service by Satcom1, Delivering Speeds Up to 1.3 Mbps

AvioIP has been installed on corporate, VVIP and Head-of-State aircraft since 2005. Satcom1 AvioIP software version 2.6 (launched in April 2015), has already included support of Inmarsat High-Data-Rate (HDR) service. This particular technology enables the user to enjoy the data-speed of 650 kbps per channel onboard, which is significantly higher than the fastest SwiftBroadband X-stream channel which provides speed of 432 kbps per channel.

Satcom1 has taken the HDR technology a step further and combined two channels of HDR, ultimately reaching speeds from 1.1 Mbps to 1.3 Mbps. The solution has been tested in Satcom1 R&D lab located at Le Bourget Business Airport in Paris. Team of Satcom1 engineers have been testing it on the Honeywell HSD-400 platform for several weeks, until the final Satcom1 software technology has been defined.

“When we talk about satellite communications and Inmarsat services, we have to keep in mind that the speed we receive is always affected by the congestion of the spot beam in the region. The spot beam covering Paris is one of the most saturated spot beams in the world. We have been testing the channel bonding in very tough conditions. However, we are proud to say that with our software we are able to reach speeds varying from 1.1 Mbps to 1.3 Mbps, which optimizes the HDR service perfectly.” – comments Francois Goudal, Head of R&D at Satcom1.

The Inmarsat HDR combined with Satcom1 AvioIP software suite makes an ideal solution for the rotary-winged aircraft market. In HDR, SwiftBroadband’s original short-burst waveform has been extended to include longer bursts of data. The original short burst waveform was not well suited for use on rotary-winged aircraft as the rotor can easily break up the signal. On top of that, HDR doesn’t require heavy hardware installation, which makes it really a perfect match for helicopter market.

Today, Satcom1 services all connectivity solutions within the satellites; Inmarsat, ViaSat and Iridium solutions for airtime and services. Satcom1 has also been appointed reseller of JX hardware – JetWave, by Honeywell.
