Lufthansa Technik Group: 157 Young People Begin Training

Aug. 24, 2015
Lufthansa Technik is taking account of the increasing importance of this specialty especially in the maintenance organization in Frankfurt.

157 young people are now starting either traditional or dual-study training programs with the Lufthansa Technik Group, ten more than in 2014. The selection process for 2016 is also already under way at
www.be-lufthansa.com/technik. All told, Lufthansa Technik will now be home to 560 young people on their way to professions in technical aircraft services or aircraft logistics.

78 of the new trainees are beginning programs in Hamburg, 58 in Frankfurt, 10 in Arnstadt, 7 in Alzey and 4 in Munich. Applicants were able to choose between 15 different professions and courses of study.

The number of places providing training as avionic technicians has been significantly expanded. With a total of 36 new trainees, Lufthansa Technik is taking account of the increasing importance of this specialty especially in the maintenance organization in Frankfurt. Apart from the progressive development of the actual aircraft, this trend is also a reflection of the significant expansion of entertainment offers on board.

117 young people will begin their training directly at Lufthansa Technik, and another seven will be starting at Lufthansa Technik AEROAlzey, the very successful company that specializes in overhauling smaller jet and turboprop engines. The inclusion of a dual-study program as Bachelor of Engineering for the first time in cooperation with the University of Kaiserslautern is a clear signal of the
further expansion of engineering as a discipline at the Alzey location. Lufthansa Engineering and Operational Services (LEOS), a ground handling services subsidiary, will be home to three trainees destined to become automotive mechatronics technicians.

As last year, Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services (LTLS) will have 20 new trainees in the future-oriented profession as specialists for inventory administration. With a total of 52 trainees, this is one of the major training operations in the Lufthansa Technik Group. N3 Engine Overhaul Services, headquartered in Arnstadt in Thuringia, is a 50:50 joint venture with Rolls-Royce for overhauling Trent engines.
This year the company will have a total of ten training slots for aircraft mechanics with a specialty in engine technology. Arnstadt has also further consolidated its position as a training location in the Group with its 53 trainees.

The percentage of women among the new trainees has fallen to 13%, so 2% down on last year. This is a clear sign for Lufthansa Technik to continue its efforts to seek out and inform young women about the variety of possibilities available in technical professions. The "Women in Aviation" exhibition, which has already taken place at a number of locations in cooperation with Hamburg Aviation, is just one
of the many measures aimed at showcasing the professional careers of women in aviation.

The sites and training professions:

Hamburg: 78 trainees and dual-program trainees are joining the program in Hamburg this year. Most of the slots here go to young people who will become aircraft mechanics with specialties in maintenance (12), engines (12), production engineering (12) and avionics (12). Moreover, this year twelve people will begin their training as tool mechanics, seven as specialists for inventory administration (Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services - LTLS), and two as surface coating technicians. In addition, there are new trainees in Hamburg for the following degree-based professions: three practice-oriented aircraft engineers (Bachelor of Engineering), two practice-oriented electrical engineers (Bachelor of Science), two mechanical engineers (Bachelor of Science) and two students of mechatronics. The degree coursework for these programs takes place atthe Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.

Frankfurt: In Frankfurt, some 58 traditional and dual-study trainees will be starting this year: twelve aircraft mechanics specializing in maintenance, 24 avionic technicians, and ten destined to become
specialist for inventory administration (LTLS). Four trainees are commencing a dual-study program in aviation system engineering and management for maintenance engineers in cooperation with the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. LEOS will train two young people as automotive mechatronics technicians.

Arnstadt: Ten aircraft mechanic apprentices with a specialty in engine technology will strengthen N3 Engine Overhaul Services' work force.

Alzey: Five aircraft mechanic apprentices with a specialty in engine technology and one machinist in milling technology will be trained at Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey. One place was filled on the Bachelor of
Engineering in cooperation with the University of Kaiserslautern as a starting point for the dual-study program.

Munich: Three people will begin training at Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services as specialists for inventory administration, and one at LEOS as an automotive mechatronics technician.
