MTU Aero Engines Showcases its Portfolio of High-tech Products and Services at the 2015 International Paris Air Show

Munich, June 10, 2015 – ‘Engines for decades’ – that is MTU Aero Engines’ formula for success. The top priority of Germany’s leading engine manufacturer is to offer a comprehensive range of products and services that covers the entire life cycle of commercial and military propulsion systems. The company’s aim is to deliver innovative technologies, superior quality in production, and flexible services that can be tailored to customers’ specific requirements, allowing its customers to focus their full attention on their core business, that is the economic and eco-efficient operation of their aircraft. At the key aviation industry trade show in Paris, the company will showcase a selection of products and services from its innovative commercial and military engine portfolio on a surface area of 300 square meters in Hall 2A, at Booth C254.

Reduced fuel burn, lower carbon-dioxide emissions, less noise – the mega trends in the industry have hardly ever been as plain to see as they are today. Take the Geared TurbofanTM (GTF) engine for short- to medium-range aircraft, for example. This technology is prominently featured in MTU’s trade show display in the form of a holography box, an interactive communication tool. Visitors are invited to use this multimedia service to inform themselves about the latest generation of engines. The 3D animations and video sequences provide information on topics such as MTU’s core modules, as, for instance, the high-pressure compressor or the high-speed low-pressure turbine. An original copy of the latter is also exhibited at the trade show booth. The main focus is placed on the benefits the GTF technology has for the customers and for the environment: fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced by 15 percent, perceived noise is cut in half, and maintenance costs are lower. The message has reached the market: The current order backlog stands at around 6,300 engines.

Exhibits displayed by MTU that represent propulsion systems for long-range aircraft include the turbine center frame for the GEnx engine powering the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Boeing 747-8, plus low-pressure turbine airfoils for the GP7000 engine powering the A380. Other exhibits - from MTU’s military business - are a cut-up model of the EJ200 engine powering the Eurofighter Typhoon and a GE38, the engine selected to power the Sikorsky CH-53K helicopter.

Full range of services

To be successful it is important for customers and airlines to be able to keep their aircraft in the air, not on the ground. MTU makes it a point to always offer the right service and the crucial components exactly in the right place, at the right time and at the most affordable costs. At its trade show booth, the company also gives an overview of MTU technologies and services in the area of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). Examples of cost-effective repair techniques are the EJ200 blisk repair and the new MTUPlus V2500 LPT vane braze repair, which further increases the life, and hence the economic efficiency, of these low-pressure turbine components.

A glance into the future of aviation

As MTU’s guests, futurologists from the Munich-based Bauhaus Luftfahrt think tank will be showcasing a concept study of what is called Propulsive Fuselage at the booth in Hall 2. It illustrates an approach to intelligent integration of a propulsor around the circumference of the fuselage of the aircraft, which ingests the so-called boundary layer to drastically reduce aerodynamic drag. MTU will also be present at the booth of Clean Sky in Hall 2B, No. G-65. As part of this, the largest aeronautical research program ever launched in Europe, MTU explores new technologies for high-pressure compressors and low-pressure turbines for the second generation of geared turbofans and, moreover, is responsible for one of five engine demonstrators being built.
