With Universal Avionics UNS-1Lw SBAS-FMS, the Calm Air ATR fleet has gained operational efficiencies including the ability to use growing number of RNAV (GNSS) LPV approaches in the north, and no longer needing to deal with legacy database limitations.

TUCSON, AZ – Calm Air International LP is continuing to upgrade their ATR fleet and simulator with Universal Avionics SBAS-Flight Management System (FMS). Mid-Canada Mod Center (MC2), a top Universal Avionics Authorized Dealer, is currently installing dual UNS-1Lw SBAS-FMS on three more of Calm Air’s ATR-42 twin-turboprop aircraft. These three aircraft will now be fully-compatible with Calm Air’s ATR-42 and ATR-72 aircraft that have been previously upgraded.

Calm Air operates primarily in northern Manitoba and the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, offering scheduled, chartered and freight services with a main base at Thompson airport (CYTH). Calm Air notes that their ATR’s are ideal for operating into remote communities and special tourist locations.

With Universal Avionics UNS-1Lw SBAS-FMS, the Calm Air ATR fleet has gained critical operational efficiencies including the ability to use the growing number of RNAV (GNSS) LPV approaches in the north, and no longer needing to deal with database limitations of legacy systems. Gaining LPV approach capability means that Calm Air has improved dispatch reliability, and averted flight delays and missed approaches.

“Having an ATR-42/72 full-flight simulator equipped with Universal Avionics SBAS-FMS located in Canada is also important for Calm Air”, said Norm Matheis, Universal Avionics Regional Sales Manager for Canada. “This was the last important piece for Calm Air Flight Operations” he added.

“MC2 is well recognized for bringing modern efficiency and safety to many older aircraft types,” states Bill Arsenault, MC2 VP. “Our track record for developing STCs and working with a key OEM like Universal Avionics in such areas is a source of pride. Together, we help owners realize additional and extended value in their current airframes. Working with Calm Air and their ATR fleet enables us to once again, offer extended, significant life, operational safety and efficiency to all ATR operators.”

Throughout 2015, ATR operators may for a limited time, trade-in their legacy FMS for a new SBAS-capable Universal Avionics FMS, as well as the in-place trade-in credit offered for legacy Universal Avionics non-SBAS FMS. The 2015 program is focused on helping operators with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out compliance. Operators that equip their aircraft with Universal Avionics SBAS-FMS also experience many powerful integrated features, ease of use and the extraordinary support provided by the company.
