NBAA Welcomes Christopher Hart as NTSB Chair

March 13, 2015

Washington, DC, March 12, 2015 – The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) congratulates Christopher Hart on his confirmation by the U.S. Senate today as the 13th chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Hart’s impressive aviation experience includes several terms as a member of the NTSB from 1990 to 1993, and 2009 to the present. He has also held two key posts at the FAA: deputy director for air traffic safety oversight and assistant administrator for aviation safety. In addition, he is a licensed commercial pilot with multi-engine and instrument ratings.

"We are pleased with Christopher Hart’s confirmation as NTSB chairman and look forward to continuing our strong relationship with not only him, but with the entire board, so we can continually enhance aviation safety.” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “This chairman’s experience with general aviation gives him unique insight that we are certain will benefit the business aviation community. He understands the value of general aviation and has a receptive, innovative approach to enhancing aviation safety.”

Hart has served on the NTSB since August 2009, when he was sworn in as a member and designated by President Obama as vice chairman of the board for a two-year term. Obama nominated Hart for second and third terms as vice chairman, and Hart has served as acting chairman since April 26, 2014. He earned a law degree from Harvard University and holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in aerospace engineering from Princeton University.

“NBAA's previous work with the chairman proves he approaches safety recommendations with a clear understanding of the unique qualities of business aviation,” said Bolen.  “Most importantly, he is open to listening to and learning from aviation stakeholders.”

Hart was a featured speaker at the Opening General Session of NBAA’s 2014 Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2014).
