FAA GA Division Manager to Present at NTSB Safety Seminar Nov. 8

Oct. 27, 2014
NTSB will host a free safety seminar on technically advanced aircraft (TAA) and the challenges of transitioning to glass-cockpit technology. Jim Viola, manager of the FAA General Aviation and Commercial Division, will be a presenter.

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will host a free safety seminar for pilots and mechanics on technically advanced aircraft (TAA) and the challenges of transitioning to glass-cockpit technology. An NTSB safety study completed in 2010 concluded that glass cockpit aircraft experienced a lower total accident rate, but a higher fatal accident rate, than the same type of aircraft equipped with conventional analog instrumentation.

The four-hour event, held at the NTSB’s training center in Ashburn, Virginia, will explore some of the causes of TAA accidents, the current government and industry efforts to prevent them, and the resources available to the pilot community. Joining NTSB Board Member Earl Weener as a featured presenter will be the FAA’s own Jim Viola, manager of the General Aviation and Commercial Division. The seminar is open to the public, but space is limited and early registration is highly recommended. The doors will open at 8:00 am, and the seminar will run from 8:30am-1:00pm. A state or federal government issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, is required for entry to the building.
