MILWAUKEE (September 3, 2014) – For the seventh consecutive year, Milwaukee County’s General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) received a perfect score on its annual inspection by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA report found that MKE meets or exceeds all requirements under the FAA Regulation Part 139, which governs the certification and operation of all U.S. commercial airports.

“We are extremely proud to once again say that not only is Mitchell Airport a great and easy airport to fly from, but it is also a very safe airport thanks to the hard work and dedication of our airport employees,” said County Executive Chris Abele.

“It is rare for an airport to pass its three-day comprehensive inspection with a perfect score, and thanks to the hard work of the entire Mitchell Airport team and the smart investments made by County Executive Abele and the Milwaukee County Board, we have accomplished it for the past seven years,” said Terry Blue, Interim Airport Director. “Safety is a 365-day-a-year focus for us, and the team here is always hard at work to keep our airport to those high standards.”

FAA Airport Regulation

Rules for the certification and operation of airports are outlined in the FAA’s Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139. The regulation includes strict standards for governing airfield and pavement conditions, airfield lighting, snow and ice control, aircraft rescue and firefighting, personnel training and handling and storage of hazardous materials. Emergency planning and wildlife hazard management are also reviewed.
