MIAMI, FL, February 28, 2014 – Sophomores and juniors from Miami Central High School had a chance to experience the job seeker’s “hot seat” when they visited AAR Aircraft Services on Friday morning for a career day tour and job skills workshop.

Job interviews were conducted by engineers, aircraft technicians and inspectors from the local AAR team, who also gave students a tutorial on facility operations and shared stories about their personal journeys into aviation careers. The opportunity to meet and interview with aviation industry professionals will prepare students for upcoming summer internships that, for many of them, will be their first job experience.

A group of up to 40 students from Miami Central’s Academy of Information Technology magnet program participated in the event. In addition to touring the facility, students also learned how to compile and write resumes, and how to research and prepare for interviews. Each received a take-home packet of information about AAR’s local aviation school and Operation SAFEE Flight, an aviation educational program for youth that will be held at Opa-Locka airport in May.

Getting students excited about and prepared for aviation careers is a long-term goal for AAR, which is working to close the gap between business needs and education.

“High schools are increasingly focusing their career education efforts on technology,” says AAR Senior Human Resources Manager Vicky Sokolowski. “We want students to know that aviation is a growing industry and that there are career opportunities available to them.”

Since 2011, AAR has teamed up with City Year Miami, a nonprofit educational intervention program, to introduce students, teachers and guidance counselors at Miami Central High School to the aviation sector, and provide tutoring in reading and math.
