    MIA Raises More Than $15,000 For Fallen TSA Officer's Memorial Fund

    Hernandez, 39, was the first TSA officer to be killed in the line of duty since the agency was formed in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The fund will benefit Officer Hernandez’s widow and two children.

    (MIAMI, December 12, 2013) – Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González today presented Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials with more than $15,000 in donations raised at Miami International Airport to benefit the “TSO Gerardo I. Hernandez Memorial Fund,” which was established following the TSA officer’s tragic death at Los Angeles International Airport last month at the hands of an active shooter. The fund will benefit Officer Hernandez’s widow and two children.

    Hernandez, 39, was the first TSA officer to be killed in the line of duty since the agency was formed in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. TSA Federal Security Director for MIA Mark Hatfield accepted the donations, which were provided by various MIA employees and concessionaires.

    “Whether it be at LAX or MIA, the TSA plays a huge role in our nation’s aviation system, and we consider them a part of our extended airport family,” said Director González. “When the news of Officer Hernandez’s tragic death unfolded last month, we felt compelled to do our part to support the loved ones he left behind. I’m extremely proud of our employees and business partners for their compassion.”
