MTU Maintenance Signs Exclusive Contract for CF6-80 Maintenance with Southern Air

MTU Maintenance has an exclusive long-term maintenance and lease engine provisioning contract covering all present and future GE CF6-80C2 engines in Southern Air's 747-400 freighter fleet.

Hanover, Germany, November 25, 2013 – Southern Air Holdings, Inc. has awarded MTU Maintenance an exclusive long-term maintenance and lease engine provisioning contract covering all present and future General Electric (GE) CF6-80C2 engines in Southern Air’s 747-400 freighter fleet. The contract with the U.S. based cargo carrier is valued at over 100 million US dollars.

MTU Maintenance has been the exclusive provider for the maintenance of Southern Air’s GE90 engines for the past two years and can draw upon over three decades of experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of high-thrust engines. The CF6-80 was included into the maintenance profile in 1989 and MTU Maintenance recently completed the 1,500th overhaul of this engine type at its facility in Hanover. In 2012 the company performed 12 percent of all CF6-80C2 repair and overhaul shop visits. Due to its long experience with the engine, MTU Maintenance has developed a number of innovative high-tech repair techniques which allow the engine to stay on-wing longer and help customers reduce their maintenance costs.

MTU Maintenance Hannover specializes in the repair and overhaul of medium and large-scale commercial engines. Among these are the General Electric CF6-50, CF6-80C2 and GE90-110B/115B, the Pratt & Whitney PW2000, the IAE (International Aero Engines) V2500 and CFM International’s CFM56-7 of. This January, the company has successfully completed the test cell correlation for the GE90 and is now one of the few maintenance providers worldwide with full repair capability for the largest engine in the world.
