CHICAGO, October 24, 2013 - The Chicago Department of Aviation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013 Airports Going Green (AGG) award. This prestigious award recognizes the value of each project, as well as the project sponsors' outstanding leadership in pursuit of sustainability within the aviation industry. Made from reclaimed wood, these beautiful awards will be presented by Commissioner Andolino at the 6th Annual Airports Going Green Conference in Chicago, during the luncheon on Wednesday, November 13th.
2013 Airports Going Green Award Recipients:
Federal Aviation Administration
The Federal Aviation Administration is a key sustainability advocate for airports nationwide. From long standing programs such as VALE to newer initiatives towards recycling, energy management, and sustainability best practices, the FAA is making sustainability a core objective of airport planning.
Wichita Mid-Continent Airport Sustainability Program
The Wichita Mid-Continent Airport has recently implemented a sustainability management plan to encourage use of conservation-related initiatives by all tenants of the Mid-Continent campus. Aspects of the plan include a rigorous recycling program, environmental contaminant control, and resource use conservation.
Montreal-Trudeau Airport High Efficiency HVAC and Energy Efficiency Measures
The airport authority Aeroports de Montreal has implemented a variety of energy-saving measures at Montreal-Trudeau Airport that have resulted in a notable reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. YUL is also the first North American airport to begin selling carbon credits, showcasing their success at combining energy conservation and profitability.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport - PHX Sky Train™
The PHX Sky TrainTM electric train is a recent innovation at PHX airport that seamlessly connects the airport's busiest terminal, surface parking, Valley Metro Light Rail, and bicycle routes, serving 10,000 visitors every day. It encompasses a quality-of-life component through extensive public art installations, as well as ease-of-use features such as bag check and boarding pass kiosks, providing users with a pleasant, efficient, and environmentally-conscious alternative to driving to the airport.
San Francisco International Airport - Planning, Design, and Construction (PD&C) Guidelines
San Francisco's new Planning, Design, and Construction Guidelines, set standards for sustainable measures that "go beyond compliance" to exceed already strict sustainability regulations and provide innovative, environmentally-conscious design for airports.
Jim Elwood, Aspen-Pitkin County Airport
In addition to leading the unique sustainability achievements at Aspen-Pitkin, Mr. Elwood is a leader and strong advocate for sustainability in AAAE and for the entire aviation community.

Airports Going Green is the aviation industry's leading sustainability forum, and will offer the opportunity to hear about sustainability case studies, innovations, and achievements. We'll hear from exceptional speaker and aviation industry leaders on climate change adaptation; will highlight international sustainability perspectives; discuss tools for evaluating outcomes of sustainability programs; and present case studies and Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) projects to illustrate sustainability successes in the industry. Many conference sessions will offer Continuing Education Credits to help satisfy LEED continuing education requirements.
