Wide-eyed and focused on the future: 137 "rookies" have just begun either traditional or dual-study training programs at Lufthansa Technik Group sites in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Alzey, Munich and Arnstadt. With them, a total of 668 young people at Lufthansa Technik are now on their way to professions in technical aircraft services.
Of the new trainees, who were able to choose between 13 different professions and practice-oriented courses of study, 70 are in Hamburg, 40 in Frankfurt, 7 in Alzey, 5 in Munich and 15 in Arnstadt.
Particularly exciting is that nine of the twelve young people who began vocational training preparation in October 2012 in a support program organized jointly by the city of Hamburg and Lufthansa Technical Training have "graduated" into regular training programs at Lufthansa Technik Group this year.
96 of the 137 new trainees will begin their training directly at Lufthansa Technik. Seven will be starting at Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey, a very successful Lufthansa Technik Group company that specializes in overhauling smaller jet and propeller engines.
Lufthansa Engineering and Operational Services (LEOS), a ground handling services subsidiary, will be home to two trainees destined to become automotive mechatronics technicians.
Two Lufthansa Technik Group companies are currently expanding their training commitment: Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services (LTLS) and N3 Engine Overhaul Services, a 50:50 joint venture with Rolls-Royce for overhauling Trent engines that is located in Arnstadt, Thuringia.
A total of seventeen trainees in warehouse logistics will join LTLS in Hamburg, Frankfurt or Munich. And N3 now has fifteen trainee slots for aircraft mechanics with a focus on engine technology. This means that the number of young people in training at N3 every year has doubled since the company began offering training in 2008.
The percentage of women among the trainees amounts to 11% this year.
Lufthansa Technik plans to expand its activities to approach girls at the secondary school level and inform them of the wide range of opportunities in technical professions.
The sites and training professions:
Hamburg: 70 trainees are joining the program in Hamburg this year.
Traditionally, most of the slots here go to young people who will become aircraft mechanics with specialties in maintenance (12), engines (6), production engineering (18) and aircraft electronics (6). Moreover, this year seven people will begin their training as tool mechanics, six as warehouse logistics experts (with LTLS) and two as galvanizers (surface coating technicians). In addition, there are new trainees in Hamburg for the following degree-based professions: two practice-oriented aircraft manufacturing engineers (Master of Engineering), two practice-oriented electrical engineers (Master of Engineering), seven mechanical engineers (Master of Engineering) and two students of mechatronics.
Frankfurt: In Frankfurt, a total of 40 traditional and dual-study trainees will be starting this year: twelve aircraft mechanics specializing in maintenance, 20 specializing in aircraft electronics and eight destined to become warehouse logistics specialists (LTLS).
Alzey: Six aspiring aircraft mechanics in engine technology and one machinist in milling technology will be trained at Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey for the challenging task of engine maintenance and repair.
Munich: Three people will begin training at Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services as warehouse logistics specialists, and two at LEOS as automotive mechatronics technicians.
Arnstadt: Fifteen aircraft mechanic trainees with a specialty in engines will strengthen N3 Engine Overhaul Services' work force.
