New Technology from Daktronics Designed to Offer Travelers Better Viewing Angles for Shopping and Dining Information in the Airport

BALTIMORE, July 1, 2013AIRMALL® USA,the leading airport concessions developer in North America and operator of the AIRMALL at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall), is bringing the latest video technology to travelers with the installation of a 360-degree LED display board by Daktronics. Located at the convergence of three passenger corridors in D Concourse, the nine-foot diameter video board is one of the only display boards at an airport that offers wide viewing angles for patrons as they pass by, along with the ability to view it from multiple vantage points.  Providing 85 square feet of video messaging, it will be used to provide travelers with information about shopping and dining options at the AIRMALL, along with special promotions and seasonal messaging.

“At AIRMALL, we’re always looking for new technology solutions that are mutually beneficial for our concessions partners and travelers,” said Brett Kelly, vice president of AIRMALL Maryland. “The installation of our new 360-degree LED video board from Daktronicshelps concessionaires reach travelers with clear visual messaging on the numerous high-quality shopping and dining options available at the AIRMALL at BWI. We’re pleased to bring this technology to BWI Marshall Airport and know that it will further our goal of consistently enhancing the traveler experience.”

All displays are controlled with Daktronics Visiconn® display management solution, which allows users to manage their displays from any Internet-ready computer. The technology offers the capability for AIRMALL to quickly create and display concessions messages and graphics on the LED displays, enabling them to better target their content to the audience at a particular location or certain time of day. The display is 95.5 square feet and is comprised of 186,624 pixels. Each pixel contains three LED’s— one green, one red and one blue. Each pixel is capable of displaying more than 4.4 trillion colors.

“Today’s busy travelers are accustomed to having the very latest technology in their hands with smartphones and tablets,” said Paul Wiedefeld, executive director of BWI Marshall Airport.  “At BWI Marshall, we’re applying the latest technology to make sure those same passengers are aware of all the options they have for dining and shopping at the AIRMALL.”
