From London direct to the cultural heart of central Germany: Berlin-based airline Germania is expanding its flight network from London Gatwick for its winter flight plan 2013/14 and will operate twice-weekly flights to Erfurt/Weimar in central Germany. The airport is the ideal gateway for trips to places of cultural interest in the Federal State of Thuringia. Flights will be operated with an Airbus A319 aircraft, offering capacity for up to 148 passengers.

Travellers can reach the centre of Erfurt within minutes with public transport. The state capital of Thuringia is known for its historic old town with lovingly restored timber framed houses and town halls. Here, one of the most famous Christmas markets is held every year from November. Erfurt’s main landmark is the unmistakeable combination of the dome and the Severi church. The historical Krämerbrücke , Krämer bridge, is the longest bridge in Europe to be built with houses lining either side.

From Erfurt, it’s just a stone’s throw to Weimar. The university town is the cultural heart of central Germany and is known for the houses of Goethe and Schiller, the castles Belvedere, Ettersburg and Tiefurt with their incredible parks, as well as the Anna Amalia library, which all belong to the UNESCO world cultural heritage site. Weimar is also the birthplace of the Bauhaus school of building. This is where in 1919, under Walter Gropius, the design revolution began.

From November, flights will take off and return to London Gatwick on Mondays and Fridays. Flight time is less than two hours making Erfurt an ideal destination for a weekend city break.

Andreas Wobig, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Germania, commented that “Thuringia is one of the most culturally diverse regions in Germany; Erfurt and Weimar are two of the most popular towns with foreign tourists. We are delighted that we can now offer passengers from the south of the United Kingdom a non-stop connection to Erfurt/Weimar.”
