May 31, 2013, Orlando, FL – AirIT, the leading provider of innovative information technology products and services to the air transportation industry, today announced that Sacramento International Airport (SMF) has been recognized by the Public Technology Institute for implementing an aviation shared use environment that enables public airlines to operate on their proprietary reservations systems on county-owned and maintained equipment over a county-provided network.

The 2012-2013 Technology Solution Awards were determined by an independent panel of judges and will be presented at the 2013 Public Technology Institute CIO Summit in Alexandria, VA beginning June 28th.

AirIT announced the successful implementation of its virtualized multi-sided technology platform at the grand opening of Sacramento International Airport’s Terminal B in October of 2011. The new terminal was designed and constructed as a fully shared-use facility accommodating all of the airport’s commercial airline carriers. AirIT’s Extended Airline System Environment (EASE™) delivers true flexibility and cost savings airports can pass on to their airline partners. Because this contemporary solution allows airlines to operate in their own native system environment, this capability is invaluable to airlines like Southwest, who can seamlessly use any gate or ticket counter while enjoying the business capabilities resident in their own proprietary applications.

As a result of adopting and implementing the shared use environment, the airport’s new Terminal B was built with only 19 gates saving more than $100 million on the project, which had a total cost of $1.03 billion. Ongoing savings is realized each time the airport gets a new airline because no additional infrastructure is necessary to bring the airline online. The project eliminated all airline-owned agent and customer-facing equipment carriers used in processing passengers as well as all airline cabling throughout the entire airport. This eliminated all hardware and networking trouble calls where the airlines used to dispatch a technician from their service headquarters from various locations in the U.S.

Betros Wakim, CEO of AirIT, states, “AirIT is truly proud to deliver technology that merits recognition with such an award. AirIT has been Sacramento International Airport’s provider of shared use solutions since 2003, and while we have upgraded the platform as the technology has migrated from its original version to our most current virtualized solution, system enhancements didn’t require additional cost or any application development for the airport or its airlines. SMF was the first airport in the U.S. to have a 100 percent non-emulated shared use system used by all passenger airlines flying into the airport.”

“The County of Sacramento strives to find the highest value for its project dollars in its goal to provide a superior customer experience,” says John Wheat, Director of Airports for Sacramento County.  “Partnerships with companies like AirIT help us maximize our potential in providing that high level of service to our airline tenants and our traveling public. The value of our efforts in working with our airline partners cannot be understated, for without the airlines’ shared vision of an operational platform that uses their own native applications, this collaboration would not have been successful.”

Key participants involved in the shared use technology project include the Sacramento County IT&T, AirIT, Cisco, and airline partners including Southwest Airlines, Aloha Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Horizon Airlines, Frontier Airlines, US Airways, JetBlue Airways, ExpressJet Airlines, Aeromexico, Volaris Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, and United Airlines.
