Thomas Lord Charitable Trust Endows Lecture Series to Promote Learning, Leadership.

(Quantico, Va. – Nov. 30, 2012) – General James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, served as keynote speaker for the inaugural Thomas Lord Charitable Trust Lecture on November 27 at Little Hall Theater in Quantico, Va. Thomas (“Tom”) Lord, son of LORD Corporation founder Hugh Lord, created the Thomas Lord Charitable Trust prior to his passing in 1989 to promote innovation and learning through civic engagement.  The Trustees of the Trust established the lecture series in cooperation with the Marine Corps University and Marine Corps University Foundation to bring together thought leaders in public service, business, and academia with the student body at the Marine Corps University.

The lecture series also celebrates the aerospace and manufacturing contributions made by Tom Lord, who led several major technical innovations that significantly impacted these markets. Early on, Lord led the development of a new aircraft engine mounting system that permitted large horsepower engines to be used on airplanes during World War II.  During the war, LORD Corporation employed more than 10,000 people in the Erie, Pa. region manufacturing airplane engine mounts, delivering 90 percent of the mounts used on Allied aircraft during World War II.  Lord also oversaw the development of a new concept in rotor blade bearings used on helicopters, which increased the life of the rotor system four-fold. Today, LORD Corporation remains a market leader in the development and manufacture of flight-critical passive and active vibration control rotor head technology.

Prior to the lecture, LORD Corporation co-hosted a reception for Marine Corps University leadership at The National Museum of the Marine Corps. Going forward, The Thomas Lord Lecture Series will bring together highly recognized thought leaders in business and strategy with students at the Marine Corps University for an exchange of ideas on topics including leadership, strategy, ethics, and policy.
