Nov. 14, 2012
The data from the survey includes concession revenue from 98 airports, representing 81 percent of passenger traffic in the United States and 66 percent of traffic in Canada

DENVER--Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) Monday presented survey findings of their Airport Concessions Benchmarking Survey at the 2012 ACI-NA Airport Concession Conference in Denver, CO. The data from the survey includes concession revenue from 98 airports, representing 81 percent of passenger traffic in the United States and 66 percent of traffic in Canada.

“Airports recognize the importance of customer-centric concessions programs,” said Greg Principato, president of ACI-NA. “Our survey data overwhelmingly show that airports understand that competition is not only important in air service but also in providing a variety of food, beverage and retail offerings for their passengers.”

Thirty-three percent of the responding airports have developed a mobile application in order to better meet the needs and expectations of air travelers. Of those airports that have a mobile application, 73 percent promote concessions offerings using mobile platforms.

From an airport revenue standpoint, ACI-NA benchmarking data shows that on average customers spent $5.00 on food & beverage and $3.10 on news, gift and specialty retail per enplanement in 2012.

Airport data reported to the FAA indicate that total revenue from terminal concessions (food, beverage, retail and services) was $1.51 billion in 2011, up 12 percent from 2010 ($1.35 billion). Revenue from food and beverage programs at U.S. airports represents 35 percent of the total 2011 terminal concessions revenue; retail represents about 40 percent.

“In addition to fixed retail space, airports’ carts and kiosks programs provide small businesses the opportunity to have an increasing presence in concession programs as well as enable airports to cater to ever-evolving market trends and demands,” said Principato.

  • 32 percent of respondents have food & beverage kiosks
  • 43 percent of respondents have news, gift and specialty retail kiosks

The survey results were released during the 2012 ACI-NA Airport Concessions Conference in Denver, which brings together more than 300 representatives of the North American airport concessions industry.
