Funeral for Tuskegee Airman to be Held at University

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (November 12, 2012) — The funeral for retired Lt. Col. Herbert E. Carter will be held Thursday at Tuskegee University Chapel at 1 p.m. CST. The public service will be officiated by Father Liston Garfield of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Tuskegee, Ala. Wednesday, there will be a viewing of Carter’s body at Saint Andrew’s, 1-3 p.m. CST.

Carter died Nov. 8 at East Alabama Medical Center. He was a university alumnus and member of the original cadre of the 99th Fighter Squadron of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. Carter also served as a professor of air science and commander of the Air Force ROTC Detachment 15 from 1950 to 1955 and professor of aerospace studies from 1965 to 1969.
