LAKELAND, Fla. – Phillips 66® Aviation landed at the 2012 Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-in & Expo this week, bringing one of the world’s most daring aerobatic demo teams – the Aerostars – to its tent where Phillips 66 Aviation shared its pilot and FBO programs, and, of course, its celebrated aviation lubricants.
Celebrating 85 high-flying years fueling the aviation industry, Phillips 66® Aviation is bringing the Aerostars – one of the world’s most daring aerobatic demo teams – to its tent during the 2012 Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-in & Expo for meet and greet sessions.
Sun ‘n Fun visitors can meet the high-performance Aerostar pilots fr om 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the Phillips 66 Aviation tent #N-083/088. The Aerostars’ Phillips 66 Aviation tent appearances will precede their daily afternoon thrill shows at Sun ‘n Fun.
Flying 400-horsepower jets within a few feet of one another at speeds in excess of 250 mph, the Aerostars roar into graceful barrel rolls, towering formation loops, and breathtaking power moves like a break-away cross, bomb burst and precise opposing passes. The trio of supercharged, nine-cylinder radial engines in their Soviet Yak 52TW trainers bellow deeply, as the aircraft’s unique design allows the Aerostar pilots to perform sustained inverted maneuvers that would be impossible in most aircraft.
The Aerostars stunt team appearance at the Phillips 66 tent is apropos for a company that helped propel the aviation industry at its infancy with fuels, lubricants and innovation. In 1927, Phillips fueled stuntman Art Goebel’s victorious flight in the dangerous 1927 Dole Race – the first non-stop West Coast-to-Hawaii flight. And co-founder Frank Phillips funded and fueled “Spaceman” Wiley Post’s record-breaking altitude flights, among other Phillips 66 firsts over the past 85 years.
