Las Vegas, NV, October 11, 2011 – The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) offers a wide range of scholarships that encourage young people to seek careers in business aviation. This afternoon at the NBAA 64th Annual Meeting & Convention (NBAA2011), many students were recognized for receiving the following NBAA awards: Lawrence Ginocchio Aviation Scholarship, Alan H. Conklin Business Aviation Management Scholarship, USAIG/PDP Scholarship, William M. Fanning Maintenance Scholarship, NORDAM Dee Howard/Etienne Fage Scholarship and David W. Ewald Journalism Scholarship.
Lawrence Ginocchio Aviation Scholarship
The Lawrence Ginocchio Aviation Scholarship was created in 2001 by NBAA and the family and friends of the late Lawrence Ginocchio to honor his outstanding personal contribution to business aviation. Recipients should possess a passion for aviation, as Larry Ginocchio did, and have utilized their interest or involvement in business aviation to enhance the lives of others. The following students received this award:
• Whitney Brouwer is a sophomore at LeTourneau University majoring in aircraft systems with an electrical technology concentration. She has a private pilot certificate and also plans to obtain her A&P certificate. As a pilot and mechanic she wants to be able to help design intelligent cockpit displays that are easy to use. She volunteered over 120 hours with numerous groups to help rebuild homes in communities destroyed by flooding.
• Michael Hull is a sophomore transferring to Middle Georgia College to major in the professional pilot program. He has a passion for flying and feels the qualities required to be a business aviation pilot include leadership and professionalism. He has completed mission trips to support victims from poverty in the Dominican Republic.
• Leslie Jackson is a senior at Hampton University. She has a private pilot’s license and worked as an intern for the Manassas Regional Airport in Virginia. She has helped with elderly family care and worked as an advocate for community recycling.
• Kevin Rankin is a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University majoring in mechanical engineering (propulsion). He is a certified flight instructor with a CFII and MEI and more than 630 hours flight time. He has volunteered time with a model airplane club and an equestrian club.
• Travis Stallworth is a graduate student pursuing an MBA at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a BA degree at Auburn University. He has worked with an air ambulance company providing air travel to patients, including injured soldiers, and plans to become a flight department manager. He has volunteered with various charitable groups to help with care for the homeless and home repair from natural disasters.
Alan H. Conklin Business Aviation Management Scholarship
The Conklin Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Al Conklin, a U.S. Air Force veteran, business aviation leader and member of NBAA's Operations Committee for many years. This year’s recipient is Christine Dow, a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University pursuing a BS in business administration, air transportation, with a minor in air traffic management. She has been an intern with Rolls-Royce Regional Customer Training Center and is interested in airport management.
