A Boeing 737-300 passenger jet operated by Indonesian budget carrier Adam Air made a hard landing in the country's second largest city Wednesday, damaging the aircraft and causing other flights to be diverted to another airport.

The cause of the accident was unclear, but the plane apparently experienced trouble during the landing after a flight from the capital, Jakarta.

An Adam Air flight crashed into the sea on New Year's Day, killing all 102 people aboard, and the airline has had a series of incidents since it was founded in 2003.

Natalia Budihardjo, a regional spokeswoman for PT Adam Skyconnections Airlines, said the aircraft encountered heavy rain and wind.

"The sudden stop of the plane was the best decision by the pilot for the safety of the 130 passengers," she said.

Television video showed the airplane being towed on the runway, visibly bent.

Four flights were diverted to Bali's Ngurah Rai airport, Edmondus Priyono, a spokesman at the Juanda Airport in Surabaya, told el-Shinta radio.

Passenger Rusdi Suryawijaya, 48, said there was a loud bang and heavy shaking when the plane touched down and that a woman was hit by falling luggage, he said.

"When I got out of the plane, then I saw the plane was bent," he said.
