AMT Day Will Be Celebrated Today, May 24

May 24, 2007
Aircraft mechanics today will honor the accomplishments of Mr. Charles Taylor as well as their own.

On May 24, 1868 Charles Edward Taylor was born. Taylor designed and built the 12-horse power engine that powered the Wright Brothers first flight. He built the aluminum, water-cooled engine for the Wright Flyer from scratch in only six weeks. He was the first person to be considered an aircraft mechanic.

Today Aircraft mechanics across the United States, along with numerous commonwealths and territories, will honor Mr. Taylor and his accomplishments as well as their own. In celebrating AMT Day the diligent workers within the industry will receive much deserved recognition for their skilled labor.

There are currently 45 states out of 50 that recognize AMT Day. The push for AMT Day to be named a national holiday continues.

Many schools, businesses and other organizations will host special events today celebrating AMT Day. Greg Napert, publisher at AMT and AMTSociety director, and Joe Escobar, editor in chief at AMT, will be covering some of these exciting events.

Baker's School of Aeronautics is hosting an event at Focal Pointe Business Park in Nashville, TN. They encourage all maintenance professionals that are in or around the area to attend. They will be providing food, entertainment, and also door prizes.

American Airlines today will be dedicating a Charles Taylor bronze bust at its overhaul facility in Kansas City. In addition they will be presenting six Charles Taylor Master Mechanic awards to American Airlines AMTs.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Frontier Airlines will also be hosting celebrations, as will many others.

Along with covering some of the events personally, AMT would like to report on the celebrations of our readers. If you are hosting or attending an AMT Day celebration please send us photos and a brief write-up of how you celebrated the extensive contributions of aircraft mechanics.
