Gulfstream Earns EASA Validation to Install Synthetic Vision on its Large-Cabin Business Jets Registered in Europe

April 29, 2008

SAVANNAH, Ga., April 29, 2008 – Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), recently received approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to retrofit any of its four in-production large-cabin Gulfstream aircraft models with Synthetic Vision-Primary Flight Display (SV-PFD).

The validation means operators of EU-registered Gulfstream G550, G500, G450 or G350 aircraft will have the option of using the advanced avionics application, which is an enhancement to the Gulfstream PlaneView® flight displays. The Gulfstream SV-PFD, which incorporates Honeywell’s Integrated Primary Flight Display (IPFD) technology, features three-dimensional, color terrain images overlaid with primary flight display instrument symbology, which are arranged on the screen to create a large-view area for terrain. Combining previously certified terrain data from Honeywell’s Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) with obstacle data, and using a new state-of-the-art graphics processor, SV-PFD accurately depicts terrain and major obstacles and enhances runway awareness at locations throughout the world.

While SV-PFD is available as an optional upgrade on current large-cabin aircraft, it will be a standard feature on the G650, the all-new business jet Gulfstream announced in mid-March. Gulfstream is expected to issue a series of Aircraft Service Changes (ASCs) to inform operators of the SV-PFD upgrade and provide information on its installation.

Gulfstream also received approval from EASA for the company’s PlaneView®-equipped business jets – the G550, G500, G450 and G350 – to fly “Required Navigation Performance Special Aircraft and Aircrew Authorization Required” (RNP SAAAR) approaches. Aircraft flying under RNP SAAAR procedures use both global positioning and inertial navigation reference systems to fly predetermined paths preloaded in their flight management computers. These paths, which are navigated through the Flight Guidance Control System, allow pilots to fly safer, more direct and lower minimum approaches, thereby reducing potential diversions. These more direct airport approaches reduce the time aircraft are in the air, saving operators both time and fuel.

The Federal Aviation Administration certified SV-PFD and approved the use of RNP SAAAR airport approaches for PlaneView®-equipped Gulfstream large-cabin aircraft in late 2007. Gulfstream’s PlaneView® flight deck features Honeywell’s Primus Epic avionics.
