Shell to Launch New Lubricant at US Sport Expo in Sebring, FL

AeroShell Oil Sport PLUS 2 is the first oil specifically developed for light, very light and ultralight 2-stroke engines.


Shell Aviation is pleased to cement its position as a leading innovator in the general aviation industry with the introduction of its newest lubricant, AeroShell Oil Sport PLUS 2. Our aviation research and development specialists in both Europe and the United States have worked closely with major engine manufacturers to produce the world’s first dedicated 2-stroke engine oil for light sport aircraft. Visitors to the 2010 US Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, FL, this January will be the first to discuss and have the opportunity to purchase this new product at the AeroShell booth in Tent A-18.

AeroShell Oil Sport PLUS 2 is the first oil specifically developed for light, very light and ultralight 2-stroke engines such as the ROTAX ® air and water-cooled series engines, as well as premix and separate oil injection systems. These types of engines commonly encounter intense operating conditions such as full power take off, cruise, descent and idle conditions. A 2-stroke oil formulation is ideal for the varying power outputs and higher operating temperatures experienced by 2-stroke engines. It also helps reduce the formation of deposits and protects the inherent exposure to corrosion and potential ring sticking in 2-stroke engines. AeroShell Oil Sport PLUS 2 provides full performance with both unleaded and leaded fuel types, and this oil also can be used in most climates.

The new AeroShell Oil Sport PLUS 2 for light, very light and ultralight 2-stroke engines is backed by 100 years of experience in aviation lubricants and engines. Its launch comes shortly on the heels of Shell Aviation's earlier introduction of AeroShell Oil Sport PLUS 4, also the first dedicated aviation oil for 4-stroke engines in light sport aircraft. Both products were developed and tested specifically for use in aviation.

Lockwood Aviation Repair, which promotes itself as an official distributor of the largest inventory of ROTAX engine parts in the U.S. based in Sebring, has thoroughly tested the new AeroShell Oil Sport Plus 2 under a variety of severe conditions. Phil Lockwood, president, said, "I was very impressed with Shell's commitment to develop the best possible 2 stroke oil engineered and tested specifically for this demanding application. After the engines were tested, they were then stripped and the components inspected by an expert from an independent, non-profit research and development organization that provides contract research to industrial customers worldwide.

Historically, 2-stroke engine pilots have relied on commercially available oils intended for ground or marine based applications, which are not wholly suitable for all aircraft. For example, motorcycle oils are subject to formulation changes that follow the needs of the motorcycle market and are not subject to aviation specifications or notification requirements. Further, motorcycle oils tend to have limited ability when used in conjunction with leaded aviation fuels such as Avgas 100LL.
