ATLANTA, Oct. 20, 2010 – PPG Industries’ (NYSE:PPG) aerospace transparencies group has announced it is selling its replacement windshields and side cockpit and passenger-cabin windows for Bombardier’s Challenger 600* Series jets and Global 5000* and Global Express* XRS* jets through its worldwide network of application support centers (ASC).
PPG Aerospace has begun using new environmentally responsible PR-1425CF chromate-free sealant for the aerodynamic moisture seal on its windshields for the Global 5000 and Global Express XRS aircraft. Already used on windshields for Challenger 600 Series jets, the fast-curing sealant has a low moisture vapor transmission rate for better resistance to moisture ingress.
Windshields for the Challenger 600 Series, Global 5000 and Global Express XRS aircraft are on display at the PPG Aerospace exhibit at booth 4053 at the National Business Aviation Association convention, where PPG is announcing ASC sales of replacement transparencies for the programs. The NBAA convention is taking place through Thursday at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
Sales by PPG Aerospace’s 16 ASCs means operators have regional access to customer and technical service in 11 countries, making it easier for them to order and receive replacement transparencies, according to Arthur Scott, PPG Aerospace global director for general aviation transparencies.
PPG has Parts Manufacturer Approval for replacement transparencies for Global 5000 and Global Express XRS aircraft, cockpit windows for the Challenger 600 fleet and passenger-cabin windows for Challenger 600, Challenger 601* and Challenger 604* aircraft.
PPG replacement windshields for Challenger 600 Series aircraft and PPG replacement transparencies for Global 5000 and Global Express XRS aircraft are the same that PPG supplies to Bombardier Aerospace.
PPG’s glass-faced acrylic windshields for Challenger 600 Series jets are qualified by Bombardier Aerospace and listed in the airframe manufacturer’s Illustrated Parts Catalog. The new-design PPG windshields meet requirements of Transport Canada and are certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
Operator response to the PPG-redesigned Challenger 600 Series windshields has been extremely favorable since their introduction in 2008, Scott said. The new design has an outboard tempered glass ply that replaced the acrylic face ply of the original design, while keeping the core and inner stretched-acrylic plies, to combine the toughness of glass with the weight-saving benefits of acrylic. The glass-faced acrylic windshields have a longer expected service life than that of the original acrylic-faced parts, based on performance of similar windshields.
PPG windshields for Challenger 600 Series, Global 5000 and Global Express XRS jets are treated for rain repellency, with SURFACE SEAL(R) hydrophobic coating used on the Challenger 600 Series windshields.
