The Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program at ENMU-Roswell has revised its training curriculum. Students can now complete the requirements for a Certificate of Completion in only 14.5 months. The classes and labs have been restructured to better meet the needs of students and industry. The revised curriculum was recently approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. A new class of students is expected to begin the new program this coming fall semester. AMT students currently enrolled will continue in their existing courses through completion.
“I am excited about offering AMT training in a concise and innovative manner,” said Juan Salmon, interim director, Aviation Programs. “This new shortened timeframe, paired with our competitive cost of attendance, will position us as one of the most sought-after programs in the nation.”
The Aviation Maintenance Technology program at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell is the only FAA approved part 147 Airframe and Powerplant school in southeast New Mexico, training and graduating approximately 20 mechanics a year. The facility at the Roswell International Air Center accommodates an FAA capacity of 80 students. In addition to a shorter training period, students also receive advanced composite repair training, Boeing 727 familiarization training, and Cessna approved composite training certification. Students also benefit from hands-on training on operational aircraft and local internship opportunities. ENMU-Roswell’s AMT program has been in operation since 1972. Tuition remains low and on-campus apartments are also available.
University and aviation industry officials predict the demand for certified AMT technicians will continue to grow. The aviation industry expects 12,000 new airframe and powerplant mechanics are needed annually to fill available jobs. Every student graduating from ENMU-Roswell’s AMT program has been employed with entry-level salaries well above the base-manufacturing wage in New Mexico.
