Columbus, Ohio (August 2011) – Michelin North America was recently honored with two Best Value Awards from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). Michelin Truck Tires and Michelin Aircraft Tires each received their fourth consecutive award at a ceremony held during the 2011 DLA Industry Conference and Exhibition in Columbus, Ohio.

In 2011, Michelin was among a group of only 182 companies — out of more than 7,000 military parts suppliers — that were recognized for meeting performance requirements in the Automated Best Value System while acting as the prime contractor for the government’s tire-privatization initiative.

"This award from the Defense Logistics Agency reflects Michelin's expertise, reliability and commitment to supporting our military’s mobility through our global supply chain capabilities," said Dick Wilkerson, chairman and president of Michelin North America. "Working with our partners at Lockheed Martin and SAIC, as well as our suppliers, we are able to offer our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines the 'right-tire, on-time' service they need. The men and women of the U.S. military sacrifice a lot to serve our country, we at Michelin are glad we get the chance to serve them in this way.”

In 2007, by competitive bid, Michelin was awarded two Tire Privatization Initiative contracts to procure, store and distribute tires to the U.S. military. Under the terms of the contracts, Michelin supplies tires for nearly every aircraft and ground vehicle used by the military. In order to maintain the military’s tire industrial base, Michelin sources some of these tires from other tire manufacturers. Since the contract award Michelin has processed more than 130,000 requisitions and delivered more than 1.5 million tires to more than 2,500 military locations around the world.

“Efficiently moving tires around the world, and providing reverse logistics for aircraft tires, is not an easy task,” says Wilkerson, “But, with four years of execution and eight awards, these contracts and our contract for managing the global supply and delivery of aircraft tires to the US Navy have been highly successful. Michelin has earned a reputation of excellence in designing, implementing and managing global mobility supply chain solutions tailored to tires.

Defense Supply Center Land & Maritime, in Columbus, Ohio, works with more than 7,000 suppliers of Land and Maritime weapon-system parts. DLA Land & Maritime, headquartered in Fort Belvoir, Va., processes more than 7 million orders annually and accounts for more than $5 billion in annual sales.

Dedicated to the improvement of sustainable mobility, Michelin designs, manufactures and sells tires for every type of vehicle, including airplanes, automobiles, bicycles, earthmovers, farm equipment, heavy-duty trucks, motorcycles and the space shuttle. The company also publishes travel guides, hotel and restaurant guides, maps and road atlases. Headquartered in Greenville, S.C., Michelin North America (www.michelin-us.com) employs more than 22,600 and operates 19 major manufacturing plants in 17 locations.
