ROCKFORD — Airport and government officials marked a new chapter of growth for Chicago Rockford International Airport in a ceremony this afternoon, celebrating the completion of the first phase of the passenger terminal renovation and expansion, the start of an expansion of the airport cargo apron, and federal grants to fund both projects.
The event was scheduled to be an outdoor groundbreaking ceremony for the cargo project, but a light rain drove the 70 or so attendees into the terminal building. The second phase of the terminal project will start within the next week and is projected to be completed by this time next year.
