NMU Aviation Maintenance Technology Program Hosts Open House

Sept. 19, 2016

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - This weekend the Aviation Maintenance Technology program at Northern Michigan University held an open house to showcase what the program has to offer.

However, the open house wasn't the only attraction. The day was also spent celebrating the 25th anniversary of the program, and an Aero Skills Tournament was put on as well.

During the competition, attendees were given a taste of what it takes to put an airplane together as students and professionals worked against the clock to construct and deconstruct parts of a plane.

Only 170 schools in the United States, and only 5 schools in Michigan offer this unique program.

"We work in the background for aviation transportation," explains Mark Matteson, an Assistant Professor for Aviation. "Most people get on an airplane, they go someplace, they land, they're happy, and they never even think what it takes to build an airplane or to maintain it. Well, that's what we do here, we teach people how to maintain airplanes, and if they know how to maintain them they can help build them as well."
