Newcastle Airport Workers Call For Greater Protection As Ebola Fears Rise

Oct. 10, 2014
Swissport staff say they are fearful they could contract the deadly disease when they are cleaning planes and emptying toilets.

Airport workers in Newcastle say they fear they will contract the deadly Ebola virus unless more steps are taken to keep them safe.

Ground staff regularly take rubbish and human waste from the many aircraft landing at Newcastle International, and say they are worried that their current uniform and gloves would not protect them if a diseased passenger travelled to the North East.

One airport worker, who did not wish to be named, said: “Swissport have told us to carry on as normal - but there is quite a lot of concern about Ebola as it has already reached Spain - and that’s only a 2.5 hour flight away.

“We have gloves, but they are paper thin, and then just our normal uniform - but we want something better quality, like you see on the telly, to protect ourselves. We don’t even have masks or anything like that.”
