Sept. 03--Miami-Dade commissioners on Wednesday changed the name of the county-owned Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport to Miami Executive Airport -- despite facing some resistance.
Tenants of Opa-locka Executive Airport, another public facility, said their airport should also be re-christened to include the marketing-friendly "Miami" in its name.
Commissioner Barbara Jordan, whose district includes Opa-locka, suggested the two airports be renamed "Miami Kendall Executive Airport" and "Miami Opa-locka Executive Airport." Mayor Carlos Gimenez agreed.
But Commissioner Juan C. Zapata, whose district includes West Kendall and who sponsored the Miami Executive Airport legislation, said he wouldn't support a different name than the one Kendall-Tamiami tenants had approved in May. Jordan said she would consider proposing the Opa-locka name change in the future.
Though one commissioner, Bruno Barreiro, called for an airport-code change, it will stay the same: TMB.
