Aug. 20--Contractor bids ranged from nearly $4.6 million to $5.5 million to complete the first phase of the wetland mitigation project at the Aberdeen Regional Airport.

This project has been the topic of significant discussion at the Brown County Commission meetings lately with regards to a right-of-way occupancy request. This request asks for permission to install piping within the right of way which would eventually carry water from retention ponds at the airport to Moccasin Creek south of the city's wastewater treatment plant.

Four bids were submitted for the project.

Mike Schmit, project engineer for Helms and Associates, said the low bidder appears to be B&B Contracting of Aberdeen at $4,597,430. Schmit said the low bid came in under the engineer's estimate for the project.

The bids will go to the city's airport board for consideration Sept. 4 and the city council Sept. 7.

This phase of the wetland mitigation and storm water improvement project includes the installation of piping and pumps for the project; rehabilitation of the current retention pond at the airport; boring under the runways and the creation of a new wetland at Willow Dam to replace the wetlands that will be removed at the airport as part of a Federal Aviation Administration requirement.
