July 21--Lake Superior College begins a new aviation program this fall.
The Federal Aviation Administration last week signed off on the Aviation Maintenance Technician program that has been in the works for years. The college expects more than 20 students will enroll this year for the 103-credit lab-intensive training for airframe and power plant maintenance.
Local employers AAR and Cirrus Aircraft have been recruiting airframe and power plant mechanics in their growing industries, and the college will be helping to fill a need, LSC president Patrick Johns said today.
The program will first be housed on the Lake Superior College campus. As it expands it will need more space. College officials are pursing relocation at the Duluth International Airport for its entire Center for Advanced Aviation.
