BRIEF: Southwest Airlines Joins Kansas City Reading Initiative

June 18--Southwest Airlines will host a book drive from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday as part of a new partnership with Kansas City Mayor Sly James on his reading readiness initiative.

The airline is asking people to bring new or gently used books geared toward elementary-aged students to the Turn the Page table across from the Southwest ticket counter in Terminal B at Kansas City International Airport.

"Southwest Airlines is thrilled to partner with Mayor James and Kansas City to put a book in the hands of every child that needs one," said Ron Ricks, Southwest executive vice president and regulatory officer. "We're happy to do our part to promote the value of summer learning."

The book drive is the first effort in Southwest's partnership with James' Turn the Page project. The initiative seeks to have every child in Kansas City reading at grade level by the third grade.

The mayor's office is also encouraging people to donate funds online at http://turnthepagekc.org/books, so the city can buy books for kids this summer.
