June 11--The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday narrowly defeated an amendment to an appropriations act that would have allowed the Bob Hope Airport to adopt a mandatory curfew.
The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Act failed by just a few votes, 208-212, according to Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), who, along with Rep. Brad Sherman and others proposed the amendment.
"I think that residents still feel a powerful desire to have certain hours of quiet, early in the morning and late at night, that shouldn't be too much to expect," Schiff said in an email.
While he said he was disappointed the amendment didn't pass, Schiff was encouraged that bipartisan support for a curfew at Bob Hope has grown.
The issue was previously voted on in 2011, when it was defeated by a 178-243 vote.
While the noise problem at the airport has diminished over the years because of quieter aircraft and a soundproofing program for residences around the airfield, elected officials have continued to strive to mitigate noise around the airport via Congress.
Schiff said the growing bipartisan support "should send a message to the Federal Aviation Administration that we're serious in providing noise relief," according to Schiff's email.
He added that he plans to continue to press the FAA to try to provide noise relief.
The airport currently has a voluntary curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
However, cargo carriers such as FedEx and UPS do have a few incoming flights before 7 a.m., so they can make deliveries on time.
